Age Spots & Sun Discoloration

Age spots or sun spots, also known as lentigines, are harmless, flat, brown discolorations of the skin which usually occur on the back of the hands, neck and face of people over the age of 40. These age/sun spots are caused by the skin being exposed to too much sun over many years without adequate sunscreen protection.

Laser treatment of age spots offers the most effective means for the removal of the discolorations. The treatment is quick and virtually painless. These spots rarely return and the risk of scarring is minimal. The laser works by targeting and destroying the cell that contains the brown pigment, or melanin. Usually age spots require only one or two treatments for removal, although larger, darker spots may require more.

Laser Treatments for Age Spots and Sun Discoloration

Fotona Erbium Laser Treatment

The energy of the Erbium laser is absorbed by the water in the pigmented cells resulting in ablation or vaporization of the target tissue. This device is typically use to remove raised, pigmented age spots. One treatment is sufficient. The treament is quick and requires only a local anesthetic.

MedLite Laser Treatment

The MedLite is our most commonly used laser for removing brown age spots, liver spots, freckles, and other brown birthmarks. The laser light of the MedLite was specifically designed to effectively target dark concentrations of melanin. The impact of the energy from the short pulse of light is similar to the snap of a thin rubber band. After the treatment, the area will feel similar to a light sunburn. Typically any discomfort will disappear within a day or so. After the redness clears, the skin returns to its natural color and texture and within seven to ten days the pigmented spots will clear.

Most spots are removed within one to two treatments though some deeper spots will require more treatments. Some birthmarks may return after a period of several months to a year, however, the procedure can be repeated.
