Frequently Asked Questions
| How do I get my prescriptions refilled? |
|
Call the office and let them know you need to have your prescription refilled (it is not necessary to speak to a nurse). Be prepared to give the receptionist your name, date of birth, phone number, the name of the medication you need refilled and the name of the pharmacy where your want to pick up your prescription. This information will be given to the nurse and then verified by your provider. Whenever possible, please call 2 working days in advance of when you need your medications refilled.

Who operates the Clinic?
The Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic is a part of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, and all members of the Clinic staff are hospital employees. Many of the policies at the Clinic are initiated by the hospital administration and correlate with hospital-wide policies.A very positive aspect of this close connection with the hospital is that our physicians are able to provide continuity of care when a patient is admitted to the hospital. This is not true in many rural communities. At the same time, it should be stressed that the Clinic staff are not obliged to admit a patient to the local hospital and may admit to another hospital when appropriate.
Is the Clinic open on weekends?
The Clinic is not open on weekends. This is because as hospital employees, the physicians are obligated to work in the hospital to cover the practices of Ellsworth and Gouldsboro physicians when on call on a weekend. Similarly, an Ellsworth physician may be covering the Clinic's practice on a weekend.Any medical emergency should be transported immediately by ambulance, if possible, to the nearest emergency room. The EMergency Center at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital is open 24 hours a day.
When is the Clinic open?
The Clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Tuesday hours have been extended to 7:30 PM to help facilitate our patient's busy schedules.
When is the Clinic closed?
The Clinic is closed in observance of New Year's Day, Washington's Birthday, Patriot's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The clinic is closed on weekends. If you need medical care on these days, please call the answering service or MCMH.
What is the best time to come in for a shot or blood pressure check?
The best time to come in for a shot of blood pressure check, to have your weight checked or to speak with a nurse would be from 9:00 AM to noon, and from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. These are times when we have more than one nurse scheduled and so your waiting time would be less than if you came before 9:00 AM, after 4:00 PM or during the lunch hour.
Whom do I call when the Clinic is closed?
Call our answering service at (207) 963-4066 or call Maine Coast Memorial Hospital at (207) 667-5311.
What rules apply to seeing minor children?
State law requires that a legal guardian give permission (by way of signature) for a minor child (under 18) to be seen. If you have made arrangements for someone other than the child's legal guardian to bring them to an appointment, please write a note to the Clinic with the day's date and your signature giving your child permission to be seen that day.
Why do I have to wait so long to see the Doctor?
Sometimes appointments that have been scheduled in advance are delayed for unavoidable reasons. Many factors contribute to the delays:
- The presence of Emergency Services in the clinic building (which is unusual in a clinic), means that at any time, one or more ambulances may pull up and totally disrupt the schedule of appointments.
- The Clinic's physicians do offer obstetrical services and perform deliveries. Since babies have their own time-table, they tend to arrive at unscheduled and inconvenient times.
- Patient needs sometimes contribute to delays by requiring considerably more time than had been anticipated or scheduled, and we'll take the time to resolve your issues, too. The Clinic staff are always open to any suggestions from those who use the Clinic services about ways to improve our services.
How can I help cut down on long waits for myself and other patients?
- Schedule separate appointments for all members of your family in advance and inform the receptionist why you, and they need to be seen so that an appropriate amount of time can be scheduled for each appointment.
- Come to the Clinic for shots, blood pressure checks, to have your weight checked or to speak with a nurse between 9:00 AM and noon, and 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Avoid anytime before 9:00 AM, after 4:00 PM and during the lunch hour.
We apologize for delays and encourage you to check with he receptionist upon your arrival to see what your approximate waiting time might be. If the wait is more than you are able to accommodate the receptionist will gladly reschedule your appointment for a more convenient time. You are also welcome to call the Clinic before you leave your home to see if your provider is running behind. This may save you unnecessary time waiting in the Clinic for your appointment.
