Lose and
Win Works for Brenda Williams
By Oka Hutchins
The Ellsworth American
Brenda Williams of
Otis has been a co-captain for Lose
and Win since its inception three
years ago. The 11-week program has
provided her with greater enthusiasm
for exercise and brought her closer
to her community and team members.
Williams first got involved in the
project to lose weight herself, but
found that helping others was an
added reward. “You meet a lot of
different people, but you find out
that they are all like you,” she
said. Since the program began,
Williams has lost over 30 pounds.
“Once you go, you really feel better
— it’s a lot of fun,” she said. The
group structure of the Lose and Win
program provides a strong support
network for participants. “You do
everything with your team,” said
Williams. Her team has always
received a great deal of support
from its local community. While
other teams chose hiking, biking and
swimming, her team found its niche
with walking. “Our team walked in
Otis — everyone that drove by would
beep,” she said. Her favorite part
of the program is the weekly
meetings. “In the meetings, we do
exercises and have different
speakers — they really make it fun,”
she said. She and some of the other
Lose and Win participants even
started a swimming and aerobics
program during the program’s off
season. As long as Lose and Win
continues, Williams will be a part
of it. “You’ve got to be committed,”
she said. |
Lose and
Win is sponsored by Healthy Hancock, a

to improve the health of residents in
