Take a Break
with Beach Ball Volleyball
By Nick Gosling
Lose and Win participants who aren’t going
on vacation this February may not have sunny
beaches, luxurious hotels or warm ocean surf
to look forward to, but they can still play
a little beach volleyball while sipping on
nonalcoholic (healthy) Pina Coladas.
In week eight of the 10-week program, Lose
and Win participants will be invited to a
beach ball volleyball game at the James
Russell Wiggins Down East Family YMCA. It
will
be an opportunity to get some physical
activity, have some fun and pretend like you
really are at some place warmer than eastern
Maine in the middle of the winter.
Iris Simon, a member of the Lose and Win
Planning Committee, said the committee has
always had speakers during week eight of the
program but because of terrible attendance,
it decided to change the game plan. This
year, organizers will be decorating the YMCA
gym with tropical décor and maybe mixing
some tropical drinks for the event.
“We’re just going to have a lot of fun,”
said Simon. “It’s a fun break time.”
And it’s an opportunity to lose some weight,
too, Simon said.
“We are really stressing physical activity
this year for the 10-week program because it
is virtually impossible to lose weight
without physical activity,” said Simon.
“You don’t have to know how to play
volleyball,” Simon added. “I think we’ll
laugh more than play volleyball.”
Peter Farragher, CEO of the James Russell
Wiggins Down East Family YMCA, had the idea
to hold a beach ball volleyball tournament
there.
“I think it will be a fun event during the
doldrums of the winter,” said Farragher.
And people can see the Y and perhaps sign up
as members to keep up their fitness program,
Farragher added.
Farragher said that the program is really
wonderful and the Y is happy to be a part of
it.
“Whenever something good is happening in the
community, we’re there to lend a hand,” he
said.
Volleyball games will be played on two
courts at the Y, using softer, lighter beach
balls, on Thursday, Feb. 22, at 5:45 p.m. |
