Dixon’s Lasting Legacy

The Ellsworth American
Thursday, August 30, 2007

It is fair to say that, without the contributions of the late Fitz Eugene Dixon Jr., Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth probably would not be the first class medical facility it is today. Dixon, a native of Winter Harbor and one of Philadelphia’s most prominent businessmen and philanthropists until his death just over a year ago, was a founder of the hospital and, over the years, its greatest benefactor, contributing millions of dollars to help establish and sustain the institution.

A man of great wealth, Dixon generously shared that wealth wherever and whenever he believed it could do some good, in causes large and small. Now a legacy that will live on for generations to come has been further strengthened by the recent announcement that Dixon named the hospital he loved as a $5 million beneficiary of his estate.

In keeping with his stated wishes before his death, $1 million of the bequest will go toward building a new emergency medicine center at the hospital’s Ellsworth campus. The remaining $4 million will go to the Maine Coast Healthcare Foundation to establish an ongoing and predictable flow of funds to the hospital each year.

Thanks to Fitz Dixon’s foresight, thousands of folks who never knew this extraordinary man with a ready grin and quick wit will be touched in some way by his generous spirit as they pass through the doors of Maine Coast Memorial over the coming decades. That will honor his memory in the best possible way.
