At Southwest Harbor Medical Center, we provide
healthcare to the individual, the family and the
community. In these busy times, we are here to work with
you for your healthcare. We take pride in having you as
a part of our Clinic family.
About Our Office
Our practice provides family proactive services to Mount
Desert Island area patients ranging in age from newborn
through geriatrics, including obstetrics and gynecology.
Health maintenance and preventive care are emphasized,
but we also care for acute illnesses, on both an
outpatient basis and in the hospital. Our hospitalized
patients are cared for at Maine Coast Memorial
Hospital. We believe that everyone should have one primary
physician who takes care of most of their health care
needs. However, on occasion we need to refer patients to
our colleagues in areas of specialized medicine. For
this reason, we maintain close working relationships
with specialists at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and
elsewhere. The Clinic staff currently includes three physicians,
Dr. Thomas Adams, Dr. Bartholomew Clayton and Dr. Marta
Rieman; and the family nurse practitioner, Margaret
Beaulac. The support staff includes two RN's, a
lab/radiology technician and managerial staff.

Seeing your physician
We will try to schedule you with the physician you
choose as your regular doctor for all visits, but
there may be occasions when a same-day appointment
will need to be made with the doctor who is not your
regular physician. Should you need hospitalization,
either or both physicians will be involved in your
care.
-
Emergencies, Phone Calls and Lab Results
Any medical emergency will be transported
immediately by ambulance, if possible, to the
nearest emergency room. The E.R. at Maine Coast
Memorial Hospital is open 24 hours a day and has a
direct telephone line, 664-5340. Medical problems that need urgent attention will be
seen in our office, if possible that same day. If
for any reason your individual practitioner is
unable to see you, we will make every effort for you
to be seen by another practitioner or the Emergency
Room (664-5340). When calling our office, we will transfer your call
to the staff person best able to provide the answer
to your questions or inquiries. When it is necessary
for you to speak with a physician, a doctor will
return your call as soon as possible. Often non-urgent calls will be answered at lunchtime
or after hours, so please remember to give both work
and home numbers. We will contact you with your test results either by
telephone or mail as soon as they return to our
offices. If for any reason you have not heard from
us within a reasonable amount of time, please call
the office so we can check on them for you.
-
When You Come For Your Appointment...
• Bring ALL of your medications
in their original containers, including eye
medications, nonprescription medications and
vitamins you are currently taking.
• Wear comfortable clothing.
• Please do arrive early.
• Remember your insurance
information for accurate billing.
-
About your prescriptions... We are happy to refill prescriptions during your
appointment. Should you need refills between
appointments, please give a week's notice before
your prescription runs out so that we my have time
to process your requests.
-
Fees and Insurance
We're making every effort to keep fees reasonable.
Because billing, statements and processing of
insurance claims are expensive and time consuming,
you can help us contain costs by paying any
co-payment of deductible when services are rendered.
If you are covered by managed care insurance and we
are your PCP (Primary Care Physician), remember to
call our office for any referrals to other
physicians, physical therapy, X-rays etc. If we are
not notified in advance your insurance may not cover
the referral. Health care insurance covers some, but not all, of
your treatment. Most plans include co-insurance, a
deductible and other expenses, which must be paid by
you. If you have insurance, we will bill your
insurance from our office. Please bring your
insurance card with you to assure you receive
maximum benefits to which you are entitled. If you have difficulty paying your bill, or if you
have questions about your bill, please call our
billing office at 667-7065. Please notify our patient representatives at the
time of your visit if you have changed your
insurance plan or your address and phone number, so
we can update our records.
-
Confidentiality
Your medical records are kept in strict confidence.
Unless required by law, no information regarding
your condition will be given to your employer,
friends or relatives without your permission. For
your protection, we will release such information
only with your written approval.

Office Hours and Location
Our office is located at 45 Herrick Road in
Southwest Harbor. Clinic hours are Monday through
Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Appointments are made
in advance by calling (207) 244-5513. We try to arrange same-day appointments, when
possible. Our office staff will inquire about the
reason for the appointment so that time can be
scheduled appropriately. If you need to cancel an
appointment, please call office as soon as possible,
preferably 24 hours in advance. This will hopefully,
give another patient the opportunity to be seen. Every attempt will be made to keep waiting time to a
minimum. To assist us in this goal, we ask that you
arrive 10 to 15 minutes ahead of your scheduled
appointment time to allow for a relaxed and thorough
check in. Please call us if you are delayed. Due to
the nature of medical practice there will be
emergencies at times that disrupt our schedule, and
we hope you will understand when those delays occur. Should you have special needs of any kind, we will
make every effort to address them.
