About Our Imaging Units

Spiral CT System

A major upgrade in diagnostic capabilities was unveiled at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in February 2000 as the hospital rolled out its new General Electric HiSpeed Spiral CT system. The diagnostic capabilities of the new CT System are described by the manufacturer as so advanced that they introduce a new era of CT performance.

CT scanning allows healthcare providers the ability to receive advance images of organ soft tissue and bones by imaging hundreds of slices of the body using lower doses of radiation. What makes the new Spiral CT HiSpeed unit special is its ability to more accurately reconstruct the images with the new state-of-the-art "continuous scanning beam". Further this new advanced process of reconstruction allows the radiologist to view the patients exam in a number of different planes or fields of view. The new CT system is many times faster than the hospitals previous CT scanner. This advanced speed has many advantages, among them removing the difficulty of remaining still during the exam for a long period or holding ones breath for an extended period of time to enable a clean image to be captured. This CT systems high speed is very important to trauma victims, children and those who suffer from claustrophobia.

Jeffrey Kugel, MD, Chief of Radiology at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, envisions the new HiSpeed system as one of the most important advancements in diagnostics in recent years, opening up the possibility for many new procedures that can be done giving our doctors the best information possible to help with patient management. This new GE HiSpeed CT system provides exceptional image quality through new technology and automation. Among the many examinations we can better visualize are pulmonary embolus (blood clots in the lungs), acute appendicitis and ureteral lithiasis (kidney stones). Healthcare in the area will be greatly enhanced with this new important advancement.

Douglas T. Jones, President/CEO of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital sees the new Spiral CT system as also important to the hospitals future permitting an increase of over 30% in the number of patients we can bring service to with the new CT system. Also the new CT system will remain on the cutting edge of technology. The systems new design will permit continuous upgrading of the equipment along with adding new applications as they become available. "The people of Hancock and Washington Counties deserve the best that is available," said Jones. "The $800,000 price tag of the new CT system will be inexpensive when we look at the advantage to better health and quality of life it brings."

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

About 1550 MRIs/MRAs will be performed each year to diagnose orthopedic and soft tissue injuries.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging technology was an unknown diagnostic tool just a few short years ago. Now invaluable to modern medicine, it provides our physicians with the ability to diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses. Approximately 50% of all MRIs are for orthopedics – knees, shoulders, ankles, and wrists. MRIs also scan for herniated vertebrae disks, spinal cord injuries and pathologies, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis and brain trauma. Magnetic Resonance Angiography evaluates narrowings, blockages and aneurysms of arteries.

Thanks to a partnership with King’s Medical Company in Hudson, Ohio, full time MRI/MRA services are now provided at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. This brings real value to patients and physicians alike, saving the time and inconvenience of travel and providing faster diagnostic results to physicians. There are also direct cost savings to patients and physicians, as well as additional revenues to our hospital. It is estimated that over 1,550 MRIs/MRAs will be performed each year.

Nuclear Medicine

New Tool in Modern Medicine, Nuclear medicine became a full time diagnostic service at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in February of 1999. Having previously shared a mobile service with several other health care facilities, this new state-of-the-art nuclear scanner has become an invaluable asset for both patient and physician alike. Used primarily to diagnose heart disease and cancers, the nuclear scanner can scan any organ in the body through the use of radioisotopes. The hospital estimates this new service will save 1,200 to 1,400 people the need to travel out of town for their diagnosis.
