The philosophy at Maternity and Nursery
Services at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital is that we’ll go out of
our way to make it as close to your expectations as
possible. There is no such thing as a standard birth at
Maine Coast. The nursing staff will listen to the new
mother and father and incorporate as many of their
desires into the miraculous event as possible.
About Labor & Delivery
Maine Coast Memorial Hospital
provides all the up to date medical services
required of a Level II birthing center.
Deliveries take place in our
specialized Birthing Rooms. You will stay in the
same room for your labor, delivery and initial
recovery. Our goal is
to provide as comfortable an atmosphere as possible.
If you would like, bring in some of your favorite
music or special pictures to make your room more
like home.
The mother may choose whom she would like present at the
birth, for coaching and support. We have Pediatricians, Obstetricians,
Certified Nurse Midwives, and Family Practitioners
on staff and available 24 hours a day.
We want you to
know that each and every delivery at MCMH is a
Special Delivery. We have
warm and caring nurses to help guide you
through your birth and help you and your baby after
delivery. We encourage our moms to be actively
involved in their birthing process.

Childbirth Classes Thank-you for your interest in childbirth class.
Some of the topics your 10-12 hour series will cover
are: third trimester changes, preparation for labor,
comfort measures, partner/coach helpful hints,
relaxation and breathing techniques, newborn care,
breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, and what happens
after the baby is born.
The classes are scheduled throughout the year. If
possible, we suggest moms and partners/coaches begin
class during the 28th-32nd week of pregnancy. This
will allow you to complete the series before you
complete your pregnancy. Class options are:
• Saturdays, meeting 2 times,
from 10:00am to 3:00pm
• Tuesday evenings, meeting 4
times from 6:00pm to 9:00pm
We encourage early registration.
Pre-registration is required. For more information
and a registration form, please call us on the
Obstetric Unit at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital at
664-5464 or stop by the nurse’s station (take a peek
at the unit and meet us).

A Safe
Haven for You and Baby
After the birth of your baby, you will move into
a postpartum room for the rest of your hospital stay.
During your stay, your baby can be with you as often
as you like, though we recommend you use the nursery
while you shower. If you feel more comfortable,
your baby can go to the nursery while you nap as
well.
| Security
is an issue in any newborn center.
At Maine Coast, we believe we have
provided you and your baby a safe
haven. You and your infant are given
matching bracelets immediately after
delivery. Our corridors are
electronically monitored 24 hours a
day. Special access cards are given
to a family member of each
patient. These "guest passes" will
gain you access to the OB Unit.
There is also a telephone located
outside the OB door with directions
for its use located on the wall
beside the phone. |
-
For your comfort we
provide
• We will provide
you with hospital gowns, robes and slippers to
wear while you are here — you are also welcome
to bring your own to wear after the baby is
born, if you wish.
• We provide
sanitary pads and disposable panties.
• We have
personal items
such as tooth brushes, toothpaste, soap and
shampoo if you have forgotten to pack yours.
• For the
breastfeeding mom we also have hand breast pumps and
equipment available

Travis Allen May, Jr |
|
One of Hancock County’s
newest community members arrived 9 weeks
early on June 7, 2005. When you are born
9 weeks early and weigh only 2 pounds 5
ounces, you need a little more tender
loving care than the average downeaster.
Travis’ Mom and Dad, Amber and Travis, Sr., selected Maine Coast
Memorial Hospital because they were
aware of the high risk nature of Amber’s
pregnancy. |
|

The nurses keep a close watch on Travis,
Jr. |
|
The Mays are residents of Swans Island
so baby Travis story includes lots of
travel — travel to Maine Coast Memorial
Hospital for the 5 hours of labor ten
travel to Eastern
Maine Medical Center’s Neonatal Unit for
8 weeks and then back to Maine Coast
Memorial Hospital’s Level Two Nursery
for another 4 weeks. |
|

Amber and Travis, Sr. parent Travis, Jr.
during his final weeks at MCMH's
Nursery. |
|
Amber’s father lives in Ellsworth so
that made being near her baby a little
easier but Travis, Sr. who fishes out of
Swans Island daily, getting to see his
son was a little more difficult. Citizen Travis May, Jr. went home to Swans Island for the first
time on August 25 — happy, healthy and
weighing 6 pounds 4 ½ ounces. Amber and Travis, Sr. parent Travis, Jr.

to the many variations in seats and cars.

experienced nurses with a desire to help you and
your new family get off to a good start.
