This is the
fourth time we are offering this popular
intensive weight loss clinic designed
for kids and their parent.
We recognize
that many children and teenagers need a
more structured program for successful
weight loss to change life long habits.
Come have fun making lifelong learning
and behavioral changes with us!!
The
program:
-
10
sessions spread across 4 months,
2 hours each on Thursday
afternoons-see dates.
-
A mix
of both individualized and group
interactions with providers and
peers.
-
Led
by a team of physicians,
dieticians, councilors and athletic
trainers.
-
Nutrition, exercise and motivation
tools taught and used.
-
Based
at Maine Coast Pediatrics and
held at multiple Ellsworth
locations.
Nutrition:
A
very low calorie diet prescription is
issued for the first part o
f
the program. There is rigorous
monitoring during this period.
A life long maintenance diet is
prescribed for the second part of the
program.
Dietary coping skills used for dealing
with situations (school, holidays,
friends) are taught.
Dietary education including label
reading, understanding calories, food
metabolism, and more.
Exercise:
Fitness evaluation
Exercise prescription for gradually
increasing endurance and fitness
An exercise activity occurs at each
session (bring shorts and energy)
Athletic education including
aerobic/anaerobic exercise, strength
building, cardiovascular status, and
more.
Mandatory daily exercise and dietary log
maintained by patient.
Medical:
Medical monitoring conducted throughout
program by a pediatrician.
Individual interaction with a doctor for
a part of each session.
Laboratory monitoring, especially during
the very low calorie diet period.
Medical education including
hypertension, type 2 diabetes, where fat
goes, cholesterol, and more.

Motivation:
Understanding one’s self, body and the
drive for eating.
Setting goals for weight loss and
maintenance. Long term accomplishments.

Requirements:

Patient
is overweight for age (Body Mass
Index greater than 95th percentile
for age)
-
Ages
8-22
-
Initial
medical evaluation
-
Attendance and participation at all
10 sessions is required.

Attendance and participation by a
parent at all 10 sessions (optional
over age 16)
-
Patient
must be motivated to lose weight
through adherence to
dietary/exercise plan.
-
$100
deposit which will be fully returned
based on attendance and completing
logs.

(Scholarships are available for
those in need.)
Exclusions:
Patients with heart, kidney, liver, or
other major medical illness.
Costs:
Each session will be charged as a
medical visit, as it will include
individual time with a physician. All
other costs on the day of visit
(dietician, counselor, athletic trainer,
nursing, ect.) are expected to be
included within this charge. Medical
visits are paid for by most insurance
companies, yet some insurances do no pay
for any visits related to obesity.
