Nursing
Clinical Ladder
This year four
outstanding Maine Coast Memorial Hospital
nurses accepted the challenge to enhance
their clinical advancement.
Each voluntarily
submitted applications for clinical ladder
status. Once selected for the program, each
nurse then selected from a menu of
established criteria those new skill areas
from which they would gain both personal
growth and professional skills. It should be
noted that not only did the criteria focus
on nursing skills but also addressed
community involvement, such as volunteering
with ambulance, fire departments, life skill
teaching and working with service
organizations.
According to Barbara Beal, Vice President of
Nursing, “This is a serious effort to
promote a higher level of care at Maine
Coast Memorial Hospital. The selection
process for enrollment is stiff and the
requirements for successfully meeting the
program’s goals are no walk in the park. I
am personally proud of these recipients.
They are examples to us all.” 2006 Clinical
Ladder Recipients are Carol Smith, RN, BSN,
COHN-S, Bailey Johnson, RN, Carrie Barnes,
RN and Mary Brown, RN. |

New
Certification in Employee Health
Upon being
appointed Occupational Health Nurse at Maine
Coast Memorial Hospital three years ago,
Carol set right to work to receive her
certification for this her most recent
position. Assembling all her accomplishments
as a nurse for the past 29 years, she
invested them into the requirements for
certification. Then after much studying, she
traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for her
exam. Passing with flying colors she now
joins the select few of her peers who reach
this honor. We congratulate her on a job
well done for our benefit. |

Our Caregiver
of the Year
Julie Fernald,
LPN is a woman who loves her work, respects
her colleagues and is committed to her
community. With these basic traits no wonder
she is seen as a model employee when it
comes to quality of care. Her devotion to
her patients brings out the highest
standards of enthusiasm and compassion.
Julie is a nurse who continuously goes
beyond what is expected as a caregiver. With
impeccable follow-through, she continuously
stays by her patients and their families
offering that reassuring individual
compassionate care with which any can
identify. With 30 years of service at the
Southwest Harbor Medical Center to her
credit, the doctors she works with
collectively see her as the most dedicated
nurse with whom they have ever worked.
Her community
activities include untold hours of
volunteerism as president of the Southwest
Harbor Medical Center Committee. She helps
direct the acclaimed annual Quietside Health
Fair, high school scholarship programs,
bicycle helmet distribution and a
nutritional cooking class coupled with
exercise programs for good health.
A leader by
quiet example, Julie exemplifies what is
special about those who work and volunteer
in the health care field. For her devotion
to her patients and our hospital, we are
pleased to present her with this well
deserved honor. Caregiver of the Year Julie
Fernald, LPN |
