New Total Joint Orthopaedic Specialist

12/9/2015
Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and Blue Hill Memorial Hospital are happy to welcome Peter Copithorne BSc, PEng, MBA, MD, FRCSC.  Dr. Copithorne specializes in minimally invasive joint replacements.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Dr. Copithorne grew up in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and earned his Bachelor of Science and Civil Engineering at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta in 1994.  He subsequently completed his Master of Business Administration at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario in 2000.  He then returned to the University of Calgary and earned his Doctor of Medicine in 2006.  In 2011 Dr. Copithorne completed his orthopedic residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and since then he has completed fellowships for trauma and arthroplasty.

With his background in engineering, Dr. Copithorne was drawn to the technical specifics of orthopaedics.  “The structure of the human body is important, just like the structure of a city, how everything connects and works together that makes a body successful at completing everyday tasks.”  That’s a big part of where his passion for orthpaedic medicine comes from, “The ability to help patients return to mobility and activity is incredibly rewarding.  Being able to move around without pain doesn’t just improve your physical health, being active and able to engage in the activities you love makes you happier and improves your emotional quality of life.”

Dr. Copithorne is relocating to Ellsworth with his wife and daughter from Belleville General Hospital in Belleville, Ontario where he has been providing orthopedic trauma coverage since 2013.  The chance to work with a dynamic team of orthopedic specialists and build a minimally invasive total joint program drew him to Hancock County.  Dr. Copithorne is a lover of the outdoors and of adventure travel, his hobbies include SCUBA diving, sailing, skiing, and snowboarding making him a perfect fit for our diverse community.

To make an appointment with Dr. Copithorne, ask your primary care physician for a referral.  For more information about his services, please call his office in Ellsworth at 664-5770, or his office in Blue Hill at 374-3943.
