9/21/2014
Maine Coast Memorial Hospital and Maine Coast Orthopaedics are happy to welcome Elaine Mau, MD, MSc, FRCSC. Dr. Mau specializes in shoulder replacements, elbow replacements, revisions, and shoulder arthroscopy.

Dr. Mau is a two time winner of the University of Toronto McMurrich Award, a two time winner of the Hospital for Sick Children Restracomp Research Award, and a recipient of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Award.

Dr. Mau was born and grew up in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and earned her Honors Bachelor of Science from the Department of Immunology at Trinity College and Master of Science at the Institute of Medical Science, both at the University of Toronto. She subsequently earned her Doctor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut before returning to Toronto to complete an Orthopaedic Surgery Residency at the University of Toronto in their Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. In 2013 she returned to the United States to New York University to accept a Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Hospital for Joint Diseases.

Dr. Mau has a particular interest in bone health and the impact of osteoporosis on public health. “Osteoporosis impacts fractures, fracture care, and quality of life. It is important that the public is aware of options for screening, drug options, and implications to injury. I look forward to talking with the community about this issue, and others particular to my specialty.” Dr. Mau has studied growth plate development extensively, and has published multiple articles on molecular signaling in fracture healing, a great asset for our community’s patients.

Dr. Mau is relocating to Ellsworth from Lewiston, Maine where she has been practicing at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center since 2014. The chance to develop a robust upper extremity practice with complex reconstruction options drew her to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital. Her love of the outdoors, hiking, horseback riding, and the ocean made it clear that Ellsworth would be a good fit, “Of course, Maine’s proximity to Canada also makes for easy visits home!” says Dr. Mau.
